August 5, 2016 at 2:58 pm #6494TimtechKeymasterAs I understand it, the current LUNI code on GitHub is about as far as the developers can get (or want to get) without a physics engine. From what I have heard, DLU has received licenses for the Havok® physics engine and thus can develop the server further. I know that at least one developer (Xiphoseer) has switched over to DLU in order to continue development.
Unfortunately, from what I understand, the use of the Havok physics engine means the server itself cannot be released, neither as source code nor as executables (binaries). This means that, although DLU will offer a much more complete playing experience, it will be limited to a select number of players (30-40 is the current estimate), with no option to self-host a server.
August 5, 2016 at 4:03 pm #6499HappyAngryCatfishCommunity HelperTim, I cannot speak for DLU. But I’m pretty sure there won’t be a player limit. (Especially that low.) Also please don’t post baloney like that if you haven’t even heard that as a fact. :S
August 6, 2016 at 1:52 pm #6510XYQuadratModeratorI think DLU clearly stated that they would not release source code or executables?
Anyways, although the server limit will probably be higher it is true that you cannot self-host a server with their code.August 6, 2016 at 6:07 pm #6511TimtechKeymasterDon’t worry @happyangrycatfish, I heard all this from Matt himself, but since it was a few months ago I didn’t want to seem like I knew everything about the project, because I obviously don’t.
August 7, 2016 at 2:38 am #6515XYQuadratModeratorIt could be that this would be the player limit for the closed beta, as I remember that this was said so multiple times. This would only be for bug hunting and only temporarily.
August 7, 2016 at 6:18 pm #6517TimtechKeymasterThis is a lie? I talked to you but NEVER about player limits. This was with Xiphoseer and Darwin. Proof?????????????????????????????
We were on Skype, it was the group chat with Xiphoseer and Darwin as well (months ago, like I said). If it’s no longer 30-40, what is it now?

It is my understanding that Havok is free for non-commercial use. I don’t know if that was true before Microsoft bought them.
From the download I found:
3. LICENSE
(a) Subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement, Havok hereby grants to Licensee a non commercial, nonexclusive, nontransferable, internal, limited license to evaluate the Product at Licensee’s premises for the Term of this Agreement only. Except as permitted under section 3 (b) below, the Product is provided for evaluation, demonstration, prototyping, testing, and/or proof of concept purposes only and no commercial product development work is authorized under this Agreement, whether such developed software is used internally or distributed to end users.
(b) In the following cases Havok grants to Licensee a nonexclusive, nontransferable, irrevocable (except to the extent provided in section 13 below), perpetual right and license to internally develop:
(i) publicly demonstrate, and publicly distribute a Havok-enabled non-commercial end-user compiled, binary executable software application or game for the Windows PC Platform, in which the Software is compiled and distributed within the software application or game in an integral, non-separable way, for no direct or indirect commercial value;Am I mistaken?

I think you are right; from this license it is apparent that DLU binaries could be released. I doubt that they would do so from what I’ve heard, but licensing was definitely a lame excuse.
August 12, 2016 at 9:03 am #6575pwjones1969ParticipantI understand their not wanting to release the source or binaries. It sucks for people like me who want to mess with the source code just because 🙂 Granted, I could go through the effort to create my own server source but that defeats the purpose of my joining an open source project.
Either way I will be happy just to play again. If I also understand the reasoning for not releasing anything, the whole point is so that everyone will play on one server and enjoy LEGO Universe like the good ol’ days 🙂
