With the public servers down at the moment and it gets me wondering. What would it take for me to make my own multiplayer server at small scale. I’m not asking for help with one. I’m just wondering if it is in my ability to make and host a small server for me and my friends.

Yep, i’d also like to know how to set up my own Multiplayer Server.

Im at the moment so far that i’ve a LUNI Server with staying local IP. My problem is that i can’t use the register function. It crashes when i try to use it. I think that is because the LUNI Server is in a ‘localhost’ mode and i don’t know how to change it.

Well, I have some bad news for you.

LUNI v0.8 setup instructions will not be shared.

This was Xipho’s one rule for sharing the source. I believe he did this so only people who actually knew what they were doing could run one.

    CDFalcon is right.
Egmo was unable to set up a server until Xiphoseer helped him, and his server is still buggy/unstable. If you want to set up a server, read about Port Forwarding. And Networking. And IP’s. And hosting. Then do it by yourself. DuckDuckGo is your friend, use it!

So does that mean that it is probably not in the ability for an average person to make a small multiplayer server?

Actually, no it is not out of the ability of an average person because it would be difficult. The issues are the following:
    – The source has never been cleaned up to support a “fresh install”
    – It’s a development snapshot, so some features are halfway done or broken
    – It certainly has buffer overflow errors and other problems, making you vulnerable
    – When stuff inevitably breaks, you’ll better have experience or you can’t fix it
    – Noobs will spam everything when they can’t play

This is why I don’t recommend for anybody to set up a server. And the no-support, no-tutorial rule is to prevent people ignoring this.

Xiphoseer, is this the source that is at https://github.com/LUNIServer/UniverseServer? That source seems to be 5 months old. I see where CDFalcon says LUNI v8 and just wanted to make sure my source is up to date 🙂

    Thanks

I called a version of it pre-release v0.8 which proved to ne a bad idea as peopke distributed it and 0.7 was maters never finished build. As said in another thread, the jaller200 fork is a bit more advanced but that’s all that is public.

What kind of hardware would this kind of server take?

    Hmm.

Well I ran mine with a few SSDs, a 3.0 Ghz processor, 32 gigs of RAM, and a terabyte or 2 of extra space.

However, that is me being over the top on ridiculous server setups I don’t need.

I would recommend at least 10 gigs of RAM, a 2.8 Ghz processor, and maybe 200 megabytes of extra space.

    I have a question:
When I create my own server I must delete the secure file. But where is the secure file or what is the secure file?

@cxopa (Seltox), what do you mean by “the secure file”? Is that mentioned in a tutorial of some kind, or what else requests from you to remove such a file? When setting up a LUNI Server, there is absolutely no need to remove any “secure file” at all.

If you are referring to the hosts file to make the original patcher work, i’d recommend to manually edit boot.cfg instead or use UniversePatcher or another configurable patcher out there (which I don’t know if they exist, other patchers might be server specific)

Wait a minute I know what he is talking about.

Are you talking about that post about that “One security file” or something that is stopping you from playing LU?

That post is a lie 😛

No security files are necessary to delete from the client.
