This is pretty self explanatory for people who know how to run Windows on a mac or have just been here for a bit and have seen things. But this tutorial is not for the people who have been here. It’s for the newcomers who have a Mac. And if you say this is useless, then you should remember a lot of people who use Macs are not games/computer geeks, so they don’t know much about doing these things on their own.

This will be divided into 2 methods:
Method 1 using a Virtual machine <— Recommended
    Method 2 using wine (free)

    Method #1
    Using a Virtual Machine
    >ou first have to know what a virtual machine is. A virtual machine is basically a windowed version of another operating system. Or in other words,it’s a program that you open and it’s like you have Windows running. Virtual machines do cost money to own (Comment by XYQuadrat: No, there are free options.). They also take up space and SOME power if you running it and other games on your mac. BUT this is the easiest and best way to play Lego Universe on your Mac! You can play on the server shown on this website AND on your own server.
    STEP 1
Buying a virtual machine and Windows.
I recommend Parallels (http://www.parallels.com). Its the one I use. I also recommend Apple’s own VM.
It’s built into your mac but it’s only compatible with some Macs and you still have to buy Windows. http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
And here are some other VMs:
    http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/
    https://www.virtualbox.org

    STEP 2
Installing the VM. Set up the instructions includes with your VM and download it.

    STEP 3
Using Windows. Log into Windows. Open Internet Explorer. Download the client and server from this site. Follow the steps to play on windows. https://luniserver.com/topic/video-tutorials-on-how-to-setup-luni/

    STEP 4
    Play some LU! 🙂

    Method #2
    Using wine.
Wine has some benefits and some drawbacks:
    1. You can do this for free!!! 🙂
    2. You are not able to run the server on this. (maybe on other paid versions of wine)
    3. It’s a little bit buggy.

Make sure that you are familiar with Wine or you can have some trouble.

    STEP 1
    Getting Wine.
Just like VMs, Wine has different versions and ways to download it.
I use Wine bottler and it will be used in this tutorial (http://winebottler.kronenberg.org). But if you already have a version of Wine and are familiar using it, use it and make sure its updated to the latest version. If you are not going to use wine bottler, go here: https://www.winehq.org/download.This is the official Wine site where you can find other programs using wine or how to build it yourself.

    STEP 2
    Getting Wine ready.
Run Wine. Run whatever version of Wine you downloaded to get it set up and ready.

    STEP 3
    Downloading the client.
Download the client using a torrent. (https://luniserver.com/download/). I highly recommend you use a torrent to download the client. (e.g. http://www.qbittorrent.org) Safari’s downloading can’t download a huge file like the client. (You can try to download it and it may look like it is good and fully downloaded but it’s not.) Don’t leave a reply if you can’t get to the login when using Wine and didn’t use a torrent! Your problem is the incomplete download of the client, not Wine.

    STEP 4
    Test open lego universe.
Open the nexus 2 client file (http://imgur.com/vFnWsNP) and open the folder named “client”. (http://imgur.com/Hn4nFxE) Right click legouniverse.exe and choose “open with” then “Wine”. (http://imgur.com/Y3YPTtk) If the option Wine is not there, choose “other…” and select Wine from your applications folder. (In wine bottler there is a window that comes up before opening it. Choose go and don’t mess with any of the things in that window.)
NOTE: When you open it on the FIRST time, it could take 10 to little more than 60 seconds to have a black screen show up. That black screen is the start of lego universe. Then comes a running picture of bob. Then a white screen.
And finally… LEGO UNIVERSE LOGIN! 🙂

    STEP 5
You’re not done yet. You need to connect to a server. First check and see if any running servers are online by looking at the very bottom of this site. Go to the website of the server by clicking on it down below. Create an account.

    STEP 6
    Opening boot.cfg
Go back to you client and find boot.cfg (http://imgur.com/J17KF9U). Right click and choose “open with” and “textedit”. (http://imgur.com/Aw21HGa) If text edit does not show up, click “other…” and select textedit from your applications folder.

    STEP 7
Adding the IP in the client. locate AUTHSERVERIP=0:localhost, http://imgur.com/2rEgB7I change localhost to the IP of the server. for example: http://imgur.com/7j5Jv7s
save the file and close text edit

    STEP 8
Open the legouniverse.exe and do what you recently did in step 4.

    STEP 9
    PLAY LU! 🙂

Here is an example of me using wine:

And here us proof that this is Lego Universe, not just me playing a video:
    1. There is a lego city coin bank from 2014 on the left of the Mac.
    2. I am shaking a camera so it’s not editing a video.
    3. I am moving the player and showing you the keyboard so it’s not a youtube video playing on my computer.
Just thought I’d put that there for fun 🙂

You don’t have to buy a VM, VirtualBox for example is completely free and supports MacOSX hosts.

WINE should not be a recommended option here, since it only emulates the Windows SysCalls which could lead to very weird behavior especially when dealing with 3D games. Using a VM or a native Mac client should really be the only option.

From what I have gathered, the original client provided Mac support via TransGaming’s Cider VM, which is similar to Wine.

I do recall files in my original Mac LU client saying Wine.something
So Transgaming’s cider is pretty close to wine and wine works well for me. So its a viable option

Ok so my understanding of a VM was pretty weak and thats why I third to compare the others to mine. Can a Moderator please edit this part of the post:

I think I did exactly as you said to do using wine bottler, and I sort of works…. I can open the game and it loads the two terms agreement pages… though the buttons are in german I think…. after I agree to both the game just closes…..

@Tech_M You face a very common problem I had for months using wine. There is only one way to fix it. Download the torrent file of the client instead of through the browser. For some reason the browser doesn’t get the full client. Idk how but thats the only solution.

I did use the torrent file, however I just tried using an experimental build of winebottler and that got me into the login screen, however… I have no idea how to set the language to english….. any suggestions? It says “Can’t set locale language to english” when I use the launcher app…

@tech_m Instead of using the patcher through your VM, you should simply use a plain text editor (such as TextEdit) to edit the file called “boot” (or “boot.cfg” if you don’t have file extensions hidden). It’s located in the “client” folder. Just change LOCALE=0:de_DE, to LOCALE=0:en_US for American English.
